12 146 ringed birds in 2016 in the Chituc Ringing Camp!

The third year of ringing on the Chituc spit proved to be of an unexpected success: if the first 70 days of camp (from July 24th to October 1st) only 6459 birds were ringed, the last four weeks brought 5687 birds, among which two new species for the Romanian avifaunistic list and several species with less than 15 observations in the country. Management plans for a better conservation of the Red-footed Falcon!

kekvercse-nagy Three Natura 2000 sites (Valea Alceului, Lunca Barcăului from Bihor County and Cânepiști from Cluj County), which are in the custody of the Milvus Group, are among the first protected areas in Romania to have management plans approved by the Ministry of Environment. The main goals of these plans are related to nature conservation and the implementation of certain conservation measures.  The plans can be consulted here (in Romanian only). (more…)

Monitoring the Lesser Spotted Eagle in the Târnavelor Hills – Niraj Valley area

Illegal logging and animal grazing through forests are the main threatening factors in the breeding period for the Lesser Spotted Eagle. The data gathered during several field trips showed that from 18 nesting sites – chicks were observed in four of them, nine pairs have not nested at all and five pairs nested unsuccessfully due to unknown causes. The nests were checked in summer. (more…)

We can do something!

21bMilvus Group took note with regret about the incidents in Braila County (http://www.obiectivbr.ro/…), in which several storks were electrocuted on medium voltage posts. Unfortunately, this phenomenon is not rare in our country or in the world. Moreover, electrocution is among the main factors of mortality for birds of prey and storks. Milvus Group began to study the problem of bird electrocution since 1995. (more…)

“Bandi”, the first Romanian Imperial Eagle equipped with a satellite transmitter

IMG_2838For the first time two Imperial Eagle chicks were ringed in the West Plains, and one of them will hopefully provide us with valuable information about the routes that these majestic birds are following through their wanderings. One of the chicks, “Bandi”, was named after the late ornithologist Libus András, and was fitted with a satellite system, that will be activated as soon as the bird will leave the nesting area. Hungarian meadow viper: a new population discovered in Transylvania!

DSCN3261This small viper is among the most threatened vertebrates of Europe. The current distribution of Vipera ursinii rakosiensis is very restricted, and outside Romania can only be found in Hungary, with only 11 populations. New data regarding the distribution of the Hungarian meadow viper is reported from Transylvania by Păun Georgiana and her colleagues. The distribution range of the subspecies in Transylvania was extended by the discovery of a southernmost population, identified using ecological niche modeling techniques and subsequent field inventory of suitable habitats, predicted by the model. The travelling Golden Eagle – 1700 kilometres in just a few months

jelados szirtiFor the first time in Romania, the Milvus Group is monitoring the movement of Golden Eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) by using GPS transmitters. Three eagles were fitted with such transmitters during the last year, in the Trascău Mountains area and in the Apuseni Natural Park.  One bird managed to take off the device before leaving the nest, but the other eagles have provided relevant data, about the behaviour of these birds in the first months of life. Chituc 2016 is starting!

The bird ringing camp organized on the Chituc sandbank in previous years (2014 and 2015) proved to be a success, a total of 24 996 birds were banded by ringers from Romania, Hungary and Israel. Due to the results of the previous years, the migration dynamics of 15 common migratory species are slowly taking shape. (more…)
