Big eagle “reunion”! 15 Imperial Eagles observed

On 25th December 2017 a total of 15 Imperial Eagles (Aquila heliaca) were observed in Arad county  (Western Plain of Romania), which is a record number for the region but also for the country. Most of the birds were young (1-2 calendary years), but there were also three third plumage, one subadult (fourth plumage) and one adult bird.  (more…)

EuroBirdPortal, launched by the European Bird Census Council, is a repository of bird data that unifies the data of 81 partner institutions from 29 European countries. Its main purpose is to present the distribution of bird species and the temporal variation (seasonal, annual) of distribution on European level. EuroBirdPortal is an excellent example of citizen science, which shows the huge potential in using the data provided by hundreds of volunteer and professional nature lovers across the continent to deliver new, unmatched results. Wildlife managers open to cooperation in the Transgreen project: Tîrgu Mureș – Iași Highway

The first local meeting with local wildlife managers as the most relevant stakeholders group in this topic took place in Ghindari, Mureș County and was attended by the representatives of a total of 6 Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) from the area, all located on or in the immediate vicinity of the planned Tg. Saving a bear cub from a snare

On November 22, at around 4 AM, we have received a phone call from one of the gamekeepers with whom we work in the brown bear conservation and research project. A bear cub was ‘stuck’ in a backyard fence in the village of Iliesi (near the town of Sovata, in the mountainous model area of our program). The extremely agitated mother and the other cub were nearby in the forest, under the cover of a thick undergrowth. Our vet, DVM Levente Borka-Vitális (more…)

Gathering of thousands of falcons, a show to remember!

In Eastern Romania, Vrancea County, near Ciorăști commune, on the border with Buzău County, there is a special site where annually, an extraordinary ornithological event takes place. Red-footed Falcons roost here in significant numbers, before starting the autumn migration to the wintering quarters in Angola, Namibia and Botswana. (more…)

New species for the Romanian fauna: Red-flanked bluetail

Red-flanked bluetail (Tarsiger cyanurus) breeds in undisturbed spruce forests of the Siberian taiga, but it also has some small isolated populations in Eastern Finland. It is a long-distance migrant, winters in SE Asia, thus its a very rare vagrant in Europe. On 17th October, an adult female was caprtured and ringed in the Milvus Group’s Chituc Ringing Camp which is the first confirmed record of the species in Romania. (more…)

How can bear hair help to protect the species?

As one of the main threats to far-roaming brown bears is the degradation, fragmentation and loss of suitable habitats, one of the goals of the project ‘Brown bear conservation and research in a model area in Romania’ is to conserve the bears’ habitat. In the area where the project operates, the most significant threat in this sense in the nearby future will be posed by the planned Tg. Mures-Iasi-Ungheni highway. This development will cut through Romania’s Eastern Carpathians and adjacent foothills, all prime bear habitats. (more…)
