Monitored species: nocturnal species in open habitats
Period: 20th May – 10th June
Experience level: advanced, in-depth knowledge of bird sounds
Number of people needed for the census: recommended min. 2 persons
Equipment: mobile phone (smartphone type), binocular, in most cases off-road vehicle
Location: 20 predetermined points in a 10x10km square
Short description of the methodology
The purpose of the monitoring is to evaluate nocturnal birds nesting in open habitats and to monitor their population changes. As these species are mainly active at night, the survey should be carried out at night from dusk to dawn. Of the 20 pre-defined observation points, 10 are mandatory, but it is recommended that, where possible, observations should also be made at the other points. In the case of a first visit, it is mandatory, but in any case recommended, to carry out a daytime visit to check the availability of the points. During the observation period, each observation point should be visited for 5 minutes and observations should be recorded at the exact location where the individuals were detected. Due to night-time conditions, individuals can be detected almost exclusively by sound, so it is important to maintain complete silence during the survey.
The data will be registered using the OpenBioMaps application on a specific form of the programme. In addition to the target species, all species observed during the observation must be recorded.
