From 20-25 January, we’ll be searching, again, for White-throated dippers along the rivers.
This species, which breeds alongside mountain streams with their raging waters, spends the winter in the foothills or in large gorges where it is a few degrees warmer and the water rarely freezes completely. This makes it easier to count them and see the fluctuations in the numbers of breeding populations along streams.
Milvus Group coordinates counts at two sites (along the rivers Mureș and Crișul Repede) where we survey longer stretches of the river, but in addition, smaller teams can also visit waterfronts in several locations around the country.
You can read more about the method and the results so far here.
Join one of the survey teams or suggest new river sections where you would like to count White-throated dippers. For help in defining the area to be surveyed or clarifying the methodology, please contact the programme coordinator (Zoltán Szabó D., zoltan.d.szabo@milvus.ro).
