This spring we set out on a guided walk with families to observe the birds we live alongside but often overlook. In summer we continued exploring nature on a trip where we took part in bird-ringing – a method that offered us the rare opportunity to observe birds up close. Recently, the third activity within the project “Family Days in Nature with the Milvus Group” also took place.
Our Winter Workshop: Feeding the Birds focused on how to properly feed birds during the cold season. The first step is knowing when to feed them, what to offer, what a good feeder should look like, and where to place it so that the birds are safe and we can enjoy their presence.
These questions were answered by biologist Andrea Szabadi, who explained the correct way to feed birds. After learning the essentials, we also met the visitors of our feeders during a bird-ringing demonstration led by Tamás Papp, ringer and executive director of our organisation.
Once we learned how and which species to feed, we rolled up our sleeves — parents and children alike — and got to work. We created four types of bird feeders, which will surely attract many birds close to us.
You can watch how the activity unfolded in the video below.
There is only one more activity left in the project, and we hope it will be just as popular as the previous ones. Next February we will get creative again — this time making artificial nest boxes, which are essential for certain species.
Stay with us and follow us on our social media channels and website to be the first to sign up. We’ll be back next year with more details.
We thank all the families who joined us and made that Saturday a more beautiful day, and, of course, we thank the volunteers who helped make this activity a success.
