Wetlands are home to 40% of all known plant and animal species. They include many endangered or threatened species that can only survive in specific wetland habitats and nowhere else. Every year, on 2nd February, we celebrate World Wetlands Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of these ecosystems.
The first step in protecting these areas is understanding both the benefits of preserving them and the consequences of their destruction or disappearance.
This was also the focus of an activity we organised to mark this occasion at a school in Voivodeni (Mureș County). Thirty-five secondary school children watched a documentary about the significance of wetlands, followed by an interactive session where they identified the species that inhabit these ecosystems and the factors that threaten their delicate balance.

Such activities are especially important, as the well-being of nature depends on younger generations, who, equipped with the right knowledge, can play a crucial role in protecting these valuable wetland areas.
