The Common buzzard is one of the most frequently seen birds of prey in Romania. Its presence becomes even more noticeable in winter, as it often perches on roadside poles, waiting for small rodents that venture out onto the surface.
Its plumage is highly variable, ranging from dark to intermediate and very pale forms. It often soars in circles, holding its wings slightly raised. The species is characteristic of mosaic-like hilly landscapes, but it can also be found in lowlands and mountainous areas. It is largely resident; breeding birds migrate only short distances or wander locally. In addition to the local individuals, birds arriving from the north may also be seen, and these return to their breeding grounds in spring.
The buzzard is very vocal, producing a distinctive mewing call. Note: jays can mimic this call surprisingly convincingly.
The Common buzzard consistently tops the species list of the Wintering Birds of Prey Monitoring Programme, launched by the Milvus Group in 2006. Join the survey or record a complete observation list in your local area — you might be lucky enough to spot a Common buzzard!
