Owls in the church tower

The church tower is a favourite breeding place for the Barn owl. It is in these dark spaces that this owl lays its eggs and raises its young. In many places they have been driven out of church buildings, but in the Reformed Church of Cheșereu (Bihor County) they have done the opposite.

In 2016, Pastor Kálmán Oroszi asked us to put a nesting box specially conceived for this species in the church steeple. We did that and in 2020 we were called to ring the 6 chicks that were in this nesting box. This year, at the pastor’s request, we visited the site again and surrounded by locals we ringed, yet again, 6 little barn owls, which were enjoying the conditions offered by our nesting box.

We hope that Kálmán Oroszi’s concern for the propagation of this species will encourage others to help the barn owls to breed in suitable conditions, rather than chasing them away.
