For 5 days, from July 18-22, we ventured into the Giurgeu Depression and discovered the flora and fauna specific to this area. It was the 3rd consecutive year that we chose to organize the Milvus Nature Camp in Senetea (Harghita County), in a picturesque setting, in the vicinity of the protected area Mlaștina după Luncă, the Mureș River and the Gurghiului and Giurgeului Mountains.
The camp’s program was designed in such a way that the participants, children and volunteers, could get to know better all the creatures that inhabit this area, develop various skills such as teamwork, creativity and prepare themselves for a healthy and balanced life.
We explored the region, ventured into the nearby forest in search of small mammals, explored the invertebrates that inhabit the Mures river, learned about the insects and medicinal plants of the area.
Perhaps the most memorable moments for the children were when they had the chance to see, up close, the birds caught with the ornithological nets placed near the camp. They got to witnesss the measuring, ringing and the releasing of the captured birds, such like species such as Common Rosefinch, Thrush Nightingale, Blackcap or Common Chiffchaff. During the 5 days we managed to ring132 birds of 22 species.
In conclusion, it was yet another successful edition of the Nature Camp and we hope that all those who attended returned home with pleasant memories and discovered the natural values of this region. Thank you to our volunteers, who contributed to the success of the camp.
