They were persecuted, poisoned and shot. This is how vultures disappeared from Romania in the middle of the last century. We want to bring them back to the country because they help maintain a healthy ecosystem, clean up animal carcasses in nature and play a vital role in the food chain.
If we want vultures to return to the landscapes of our country, it is important to challenge the myths and misconceptions surrounding them, which over time have turned these birds into targets of persecution.
That is also the purpose of International Vulture Awareness Day, a day marked by the Milvus Group and Târgu Mureș Zoo. During the guided tours, specialists told participants about the vulture species that once lived in Romania, their essential role in nature, and the threats that led to their disappearance.

But Milvus isn’t just spreading the word—they’re taking action! As a key partner in the Bearded Vulture LIFE project, the team keeps a close eye on GPS-tagged vultures visiting Romania. They provide supplementary food for these wandering birds and stand ready to rescue and treat any vulture that gets into trouble.
