Spend time in your favourite places observing birds — then tell us what you’ve seen! In just 15 minutes you can observe the birds around you. Identify them, count them, and submit your observations to help scientists better understand and protect birds worldwide.

What is the Great Backyard Bird Count?

Every February, for four days, the world comes together for the love of birds. During these days (13–16 February), we invite people to spend time in their favourite places, observe and count as many birds as possible, and share their observations with us.

How can you take part?

Participation is easy and enjoyable, can be done individually or in groups, and can take place anywhere there are birds.

  • Step 1: Decide where you will observe birds.
  • Step 2: Observe birds for at least 15 minutes, at least once during 13–16 February 2026.
  • Step 3: Identify all the birds you see or hear at your chosen time and location, and use the best tool to share your observations. We recommend using our own database, OpenBirdMaps, and the associated OpenBioMaps mobile application, where you can upload your observations of birds in Romania. These can be used at any time of the year to record birds and to take part in our monitoring programmes.
