The programme will run for the next seven years and is led by the <strong>Nature Conservation Department of the Herman Ott\u00f3 Institute<\/strong> in Hungary, with the participation of 11 professional organisations, including <strong>Milvus Group<\/strong>. Until the 1980s it was considered an agricultural pest, but today it is <strong>one of the most endangered mammal species in Romania<\/strong>. Among the most significant threats are the disappearance of short-grazed grasslands and the severe fragmentation of habitats.<\/span>&#13;\n&#13;\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the ground squirrel is one of the main prey species of the saker falcon and the eastern imperial eagle, restoring ground squirrel habitats can also strengthen the populations of these birds of prey.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Why is a \u201cconservation safety net\u201d needed?<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aim of the <strong>CitellusLIFE programme<\/strong> is to <strong>ensure the survival of the three genetic lineages identified within the ground squirrel population of the Pannonian Region<\/strong>. To this end, a <strong>nationwide survey<\/strong> was organised in <strong>2009\u20132010<\/strong>. Based on the collected data, 82 Natura 2000 sites were proposed for the species.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conservation of the Saker falcon (<em>Falco cherrug<\/em>) has continuously been linked to the assessment of ground squirrel colonies. Mapping the species\u2019 distribution in the Pannonian Region was therefore partly the result of conservation efforts targeting this falcon. Within a <a href=\"https:\/\/sakerlife2.mme.hu\/en\/index.html\">project<\/a> funded by the European Union\u2019s Life+ programme<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <strong>first translocations<\/strong> of the species were carried out, with the dual aim of rescuing individuals from habitats threatened with destruction and revitalising smaller colonies through the introduction of new individuals.\u00a0<\/span>&#13;\n&#13;\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, within the framework of the project \u201cSecuring food sources for endangered populations of Saker falcon and Eastern imperial eagle in the Carpathian Basin\u201d (LIFE13 NAT\/HU\/000183), actions were undertaken in Hungary and Romania to halt the decline of ground squirrel populations, a crucial food source for the Saker falcon.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, a decade after the launch of that project, <strong>CitellusLIFE<\/strong> once again offers the opportunity to assess the status of ground squirrel colonies, improve the genetic status of target populations through the introduction of individuals from other populations, and restore degraded habitats that are crucial for the species.<\/span><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>How can you help?<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is important to know where ground squirrel colonies occur \u2014 and you can help with this. If you observe a ground squirrel during your time in nature, please record your observation in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/openmammalmaps.ro\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OpenMammalMaps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> database. If you do not yet have an account, the first step is to download the free OpenBioMaps application, through which you can access the OpenMammalMaps database.
