{"id":50838,"date":"2026-02-27T13:44:15","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T11:44:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/feeding-the-birds-winters-lesson-about-nature\/"},"modified":"2026-02-27T13:54:27","modified_gmt":"2026-02-27T11:54:27","slug":"feeding-the-birds-winters-lesson-about-nature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/en\/feeding-the-birds-winters-lesson-about-nature\/","title":{"rendered":"Feeding the birds: winter\u2019s lesson about nature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the international <strong>CREA+BIRD project<\/strong>, in which we participate alongside our partners from Romania, Finland, Slovenia and Italy, we set out to develop an educational module based on four activities , one for each season. This module, developed by teachers, researchers and specialists in environmental education, will become a\u00a0 teaching tool enabling educators to address the topic of sustainability and to foster green competences among students through innovative methods.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of 2025, we piloted the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/en\/creabird-for-a-green-education\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">autumn <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">activity, developed by our team, with Year 6 and Year 7 students. Its main theme was the aquatic habitat, approached from the perspective of biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naturally, with the change of season, our attention turned to the specific challenges of winter. Thus, the <strong>winter activity<\/strong> of the <strong>Erasmus+ CREA+BIRD project<\/strong> focused on <strong>feeding birds<\/strong> during the cold season. This activity provides a valuable educational context, as it enables students to closely observe the species visiting the bird feeder, analyse their behaviour, and more easily identify their distinctive characteristics.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 12\u201313-year-old students of <strong>\u201cKiss Gergely\u201d Secondary School<\/strong> in P\u0103s\u0103reni (Mure\u0219 County) explored the basics of winter bird feeding, addressing questions such as: Why do we feed birds in winter? When and with what should they be fed?<\/span><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_20260225_232403-1-1024x421.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"421\" src=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_20260225_232403-1-1024x421.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50828\" srcset=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_20260225_232403-1-1024x421.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_20260225_232403-1-300x123.jpg 300w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_20260225_232403-1-768x316.jpg 768w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_20260225_232403-1-1536x632.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_20260225_232403-1-600x247.jpg 600w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_20260225_232403-1.jpg 1997w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The activities placed strong emphasis on <strong>species recognition<\/strong> and <strong>protection<\/strong>. Among the winter visitors to the feeder, particular attention was given to the blue tit, the house sparrow and the blackbird, analysing their distinctive features. Through stories, students discovered the habits and symbolism associated with these species: the blackbird symbolises renewal, the house sparrow represents simplicity, modesty and loyalty, while in the Finnish national epic <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kalevala<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the blue tit offers agricultural advice to the farmer. Legends, folk tales, national epics and contemporary songs created an inspiring atmosphere and stimulated the desire to create.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aim of this was to strengthen, through experiential learning, a <strong>sense of responsibility towards nature<\/strong>.
