Coordinated internationally by <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wetlands.org\/\">Wetlands International<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>,<\/strong> the census brings together tens of thousands of participants who collect data from <strong>189 countries and territories<\/strong>, monitoring more than <strong>57,000 wetlands<\/strong> worldwide.<\/span><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IWC_participation_2025_notitle-1024x576.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IWC_participation_2025_notitle-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IWC_participation_2025_notitle-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IWC_participation_2025_notitle-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IWC_participation_2025_notitle-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IWC_participation_2025_notitle-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IWC_participation_2025_notitle-800x450.png 800w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IWC_participation_2025_notitle-600x338.png 600w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/IWC_participation_2025_notitle.png 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designed to <strong>estimate waterbird population sizes and trends<\/strong>, <strong>identify<\/strong> and <strong>monitor priority wetlands<\/strong> for these species, and <strong>support wetland protection and management<\/strong>, the census has contributed to remarkable conservation achievements, including:<\/span><\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designation of <strong>956 Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance<\/strong>, covering 1.5 million km<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (size of Mongolia);<\/span><\/li>\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identification of <strong>2,701 Important Bird Areas<\/strong>, covering 1.75 million km<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (size of Libya);<\/span><\/li>\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Identification of <strong>2,721 Special Protection Areas<\/strong> across the EU, covering 418,000 km<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (larger than Germany).<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <strong>Romania<\/strong>, the programme is coordinated by the <strong>Romanian Ornithological Society (SOR)<\/strong> and the<strong> Milvus Group<\/strong>, which have been counting waterbirds in the country\u2019s wetlands with the support of volunteers since the 2000\u2019s .<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/en\/results-of-the-2025-winter-waterfowl-census\/\">January 2025<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>,<\/strong> <strong>189 observers<\/strong> covered<strong> 526 sites<\/strong> nationwide, counting over one million individual birds belonging to 190 species.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between <strong>10 and 20 January<\/strong>, we will once again head out to count waterbirds, and we invite you to join us!
