In the first days of the new year, thousands of people search desperately for their pets, which became frightened, lost, or ran away when the fireworks set off.<\/span><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">But what happens to wild animals? <\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every year, <strong>new research<\/strong> emerges on the effects of fireworks on wildlife. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brill.com\/view\/journals\/beh\/162\/10-11\/article-p809_7.xml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that fireworks cause <strong>significant distress to urban birds<\/strong>. The study was conducted by researchers at Anglia Ruskin University in the UK and published in the\u00a0 Behaviour <\/span>journal.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The research focused on <strong>urban birds<\/strong> from the <strong>corvid family<\/strong> (crows, jackdaws, rooks, etc.). The data showed that the birds exhibited erratic flight patterns, abandoned their usual roosting sites, and gathered in unusual locations hours before midnight.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authors of the study say that these behaviours indicate <strong>prolonged stress<\/strong> and <strong>discomfort<\/strong>. It was shown that the noise and lights from fireworks can trigger fear responses in birds, even before the main displays begin. Birds flew in circles, frequently changed direction, and avoided their usual roosting trees \u2014 clear signs of stress and fear.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Previous research<\/strong> has shown that geese fly higher and further during fireworks, while songbirds <strong>lose sleep<\/strong> and become <strong>more active at night<\/strong>. Weather radar data has even recorded a thousand-fold increase in birds taking flight on New Year\u2019s Eve compared to other nights.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Romania, several cities have decided to <strong>abandon this tradition<\/strong>. <strong>Bra\u0219ov City Hall<\/strong> announced that it will no longer hold a New Year\u2019s Eve fireworks display. The decision aims to protect pets and wildlife from the stress and harm caused by loud explosions and to safeguard the environment from chemical pollution. Instead of fireworks, a<strong> laser show<\/strong> will be held in Pia\u021ba Sfatului, the city\u2019s main square.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the same reasons, fireworks have also been cancelled by the city authorities in <strong>T\u00e2rgu Mure\u0219<\/strong>, <strong>Sf\u00e2ntu Gheorghe<\/strong>, <strong>Constan\u021ba<\/strong>, <strong>Cluj-Napoca<\/strong>, <strong>Ia\u0219i <\/strong>and <strong>Ploie\u0219ti<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Untitled-design-16-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"940\" height=\"788\" src=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Untitled-design-16-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50132\" srcset=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Untitled-design-16-1.png 940w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Untitled-design-16-1-300x251.png 300w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Untitled-design-16-1-768x644.png 768w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Untitled-design-16-1-600x503.png 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We urge everyone who cares about nature and animal welfare, whether for pets or wild species, to <strong>celebrate<\/strong> the New Year <strong>in a way that does not cause suffering to these animals<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"New Year\u2019s Eve fireworks are a major and regularly recurring human-caused impact on the environment, producing light, noise, and air pollution.&#13; The animals that feel the effects of fireworks most strongly are both wild and domestic.
