One of the species you can spot at this time is the <strong>Black redstart<\/strong> (<em>Phoenicurus ochruros<\/em>).<\/span><\/p><p>Unlike its close relative, Common redstart, the Black redstart stays mainly in Europe throughout the winter, choosing a warmer region around the Mediterranean Sea with suitable food sources. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/hazi-rozsdafarku-1024x641.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/hazi-rozsdafarku-1024x641.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/hazi-rozsdafarku-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/hazi-rozsdafarku-768x481.jpg 768w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/hazi-rozsdafarku-1536x961.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/hazi-rozsdafarku-2048x1282.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/hazi-rozsdafarku-600x375.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Photo: M\u00e1ty\u00e1s Fej\u00e9r-Kir\u00e1ly<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>natural habitat of the species<\/strong> always included <strong>rocky habitats<\/strong>, making it primarily a mountain species in most parts of its range. However, since the mid-19<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century it <strong>started to breed on buildings<\/strong>, also appearing in urban areas and spreading its range to lowland areas within the 20<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century.\u00a0 It is therefore not unusual to observe a Black redstart in the city, calling from the roof of a building, and swagging its red tail in its specific manner.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During <strong>autumn<\/strong> and <strong>winter<\/strong>, the species should be even more numerous in SE Europe than during the breeding season, as in addition to residents, migrants from further north arrive. At the same time, the Black redstart is one of the last species to begin migration, making <strong>November the ideal month to observe it.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <strong>complete lists<\/strong> uploaded to the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/eurobirdportal.org\/ebp\/en\/seelists\/22710051\/2025\">EuroBirdPortal<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 an international platform that compiles bird distribution data across Europe &#8211;\u00a0 it seems that the reporting rates <strong>at the beginning of October in 2025 were lower than the historical averag<\/strong>e, however, towards the end of October, the species has reached its average values.
