{"id":49323,"date":"2025-11-05T11:38:14","date_gmt":"2025-11-05T09:38:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/?p=49323"},"modified":"2025-11-05T11:50:44","modified_gmt":"2025-11-05T09:50:44","slug":"guardians-of-storks-programme-first-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/en\/guardians-of-storks-programme-first-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Guardians of storks Programme \u2013 first year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In <strong>February 2025<\/strong>, <strong>we launched a new monitoring program<\/strong> \u2014 this time dedicated to the <strong>White stork nests in Romania<\/strong> \u2014 to gain a clearer understanding of the stork population breeding in our country.<\/p><p>We invited all nature enthusiasts to become <strong>Guardians of the storks <\/strong>and help us by reporting information such as the storks\u2019 arrival at the nest, pair formation, egg laying, hatching, and the chicks\u2019 first flight, among others.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Untitled-design-3-1-1024x768.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Untitled-design-3-1-1024x768.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Untitled-design-3-1-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Untitled-design-3-1-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Untitled-design-3-1-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Untitled-design-3-1-600x450.png 600w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Untitled-design-3-1.png 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><p>In this <strong>first year<\/strong> of the monitoring program, our <a href=\"https:\/\/openbirdmaps.ro\/?bookmark=1&#56;&#49;&#64;&#99;&#117;ibd&#101;&#98;a&#114;&#122;a&#97;&#108;ba&amp;qtable=milvus_nest_data\">OpenBirdMaps (OBM)<\/a> database has recorded <strong>361 stork nests,<\/strong> of which<strong> 124 were monitored<\/strong>. With the help of <strong>14 dedicated guardians<\/strong>, we received <strong>regular data from 50 nests<\/strong>, and monthly updates from 10 of them.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1169\" height=\"826\" src=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/golya-monitoring-RO.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/golya-monitoring-RO.png 1169w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/golya-monitoring-RO-300x212.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1169px) 100vw, 1169px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">M<em>onitored nests &#8211; green dots, unmonitored nests &#8211; red dot<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><p>From these observations, we learned that the first stork arrived on March 7, and by April 5, at least one stork had returned to every monitored nest. By April 25, pairs had reunited, and some had already begun laying eggs. In total, 331 White stork chicks hatched from the monitored nests.<\/p><p>We believe this is a promising start, and in the coming years we hope to increase the number of Guards, who provide us information about the stork nests.<\/p><p><strong><em>Do you live near a nest? Do you pass by the same nest on your way to work? Have you spotted a nest while out for a walk?\u00a0 If your answer is YES to any of these questions, or if you simply wish to contribute to this programme, don\u2019t hesitate!No specialist knowledge or equipment is required. Any information related to a nest is welcome. If you have the possibility to occasionally or even regularly upload data about the same nest, you will be providing us with extremely valuable information that will help us better understand stork behaviour and nesting dynamics.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/en\/monitoring\/white-stork-nest-monitoring\/\">Here<\/a> <\/strong>you can find a <strong>brief description<\/strong> and the <strong>Methodology<\/strong> of the White stork nest monitoring Programme.<\/p><p>We sincerely thank everyone who contributed data during this first year of the project!
