With over one million barriers blocking Europe\u2019s rivers<\/strong>, prioritising dam removal is crucial<\/strong>. This is why the Open Rivers Programme<\/strong><\/a> focuses on removing as many small, obsolete dams as possible from rivers across Europe.<\/span><\/p>

The situation is no different on the waterways of the Upper Mure\u0219 Basin<\/strong>. Despite its natural value, the connectivity of the Mure\u0219 River and its tributaries, from the source to Reghin, is affected by numerous dams and small barriers<\/strong>, most of them outdated. These obstacles block fish migration<\/strong>, affect water quality<\/strong>, and reduce the resilience of aquatic ecosystems.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>

From April this year until March 2026, together with our project partners \u2013 the Romanian Wilderness Society <\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 and in collaboration with Fauna & Flora International<\/strong>, we are collecting data and making a full inventory of artificial barriers across 550 km of rivers and tributaries<\/strong>. At the same time, we are assessing their ecological impact and establishing a list of barriers to be proposed for removal.<\/span><\/p>
