It took the effort of several people to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/en\/an-incredible-journey-and-a-successful-rescue-mission-in-the-danube-delta\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">save the bird<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/en\/projects\/bearded-vulture-life\/\"><strong>Bearded Vulture LIFE<\/strong><\/a> programme.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once recovered from that area, Dryan regained his strength in a short time and <strong>we were able to <\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/en\/dryans-adventures\/\">release him<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> near the M\u0103cin Mountains (Tulcea County)<\/strong>. The very next day, Dryan had already crossed our country\u2019s border and continued his journey through south-east Europe.<\/span><\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"575\" height=\"669\" src=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Vulture-Conservation-Foundation1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48837\" srcset=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Vulture-Conservation-Foundation1.png 575w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Vulture-Conservation-Foundation1-258x300.png 258w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 575px) 100vw, 575px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Source: Vulture Conservation Foundation<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About two weeks after his release, a cattle farmer from Ethymos (Greece) contacted the Society for the Protection of Biodiversity of Thrace (SPBT) about a <strong>weakened and injured Cinereous vulture<\/strong>. An SPBT team of specialists immediately rushed to the site and <strong>transferred the bird to the OFYPEKA facility in Dadia<\/strong> to provide Dryan with first aid. Unfortunately, despite the rapid response, <strong>the vulture died only a few hours later.<\/strong><\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An initial examination of the bird\u2019s injuries \u2013 including a stretched leg and burns on its abdomen and wings \u2013 suggests that <strong>it had most likely come into contact with power lines<\/strong>. Data from the transmitter and the field investigation also indicate that the incident probably occurred in Bulgaria, where Dryan had been flying the previous day.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This tragic event highlights one of the <strong>greatest dangers<\/strong> faced by birds of prey: <strong>electrocution<\/strong> and c<strong>ollisions with power lines<\/strong> remain a <strong>serious threat<\/strong> to vultures and other large raptors across the region.<\/span><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"EN: A tragic end for Dryan&#13; &#13; We all followed with anxious anticipation the rescue of the Cinereous vulture, Dryan, who at the beginning of July 2025 ventured into a dense reedbed in the Danube Delta.
