biodiversity is <strong>the upper course of the Mure\u0219 River?<\/strong><\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\r\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This area hosts a wide <strong>variety of habitats<\/strong> that support a rich aquatic world of fish, mammals, and amphibians.<\/span><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped outdated and no longer in use \u2013 have <strong>fragmented these habitats<\/strong>, preventing the free movement of certain migratory fish species and disrupting the transport of sediment and nutrients in the rivers \u2013 significantly reducing fish spawning opportunities.<\/span><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 far, only the lower course of the river has been the focus of restoration projects. But through the <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/openrivers.eu\/projects\/202509726-identifying-barriers-upper-mures-basin-romania\/\">Open Rivers Programme in the Upper Mure\u0219 Basin<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we are now turning our attention to the upper section.<\/span><\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Open-Rivers-logo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"368\" height=\"137\" src=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Open-Rivers-logo.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47845\" srcset=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Open-Rivers-logo.png 368w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Open-Rivers-logo-300x112.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong>main goal<\/strong> of the project is to <strong>identify<\/strong> and <strong>prioritise artificial barriers<\/strong> in the upper Mure\u0219 Basin for potential removal, restore habitat connectivity, and boost biodiversity.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Together with our project partners, the <strong>Romanian Wilderness Society (RWS)<\/strong>, we will conduct extensive studies over 550 km of river and tributaries. We will map the river to assess the ecological impact of each barrier.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The data collected will be integrated into national and European platforms such as the <strong>AMBER Barrier Atlas<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our aim is to produce a complete <strong>inventory of existing barriers<\/strong> on this section of the Mure\u0219 and to compile a list of those most suitable for removal.<\/span><\/p><p>Ultimately, this effort will complement the work done on the lower Mure\u0219, contributing to a basin-wide strategy to improve riparian ecosystems and enhance climate resilience.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Did you know that one of the most valuable river stretches in Romania in terms of biodiversity is the upper course of the Mure\u0219 River?
