{"id":47647,"date":"2025-06-06T11:19:33","date_gmt":"2025-06-06T08:19:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/spring-begins-withmaintenance\/"},"modified":"2025-06-06T13:10:23","modified_gmt":"2025-06-06T10:10:23","slug":"spring-begins-withmaintenance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/en\/spring-begins-withmaintenance\/","title":{"rendered":"Spring begins with\u2026maintenance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to running annual monitoring programmes, rehabilitating injured wild animals and carrying out numerous environmental education activities, we also place emphasis on <strong>conservation programmes for endangered species<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Red-footed falcon<\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of these species is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/en\/birds\/vespertinus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red-footed falcon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a bird that has suffered greatly due to the loss of nesting sites. Over the years, we have been <strong>partners in several projects aimed at strengthening this species\u2019 population<\/strong>, by planting trees and installing artificial nest boxes among other conservation activities.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our work does not end with the completion of a project. Every year we revisit the locations where we installed the nest boxes and carry out <strong>maintenance work<\/strong> or even <strong>replace the damaged ones<\/strong>. For example, we continue to maintain the artificial nestboxes mounted more than 15 years ago within a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/en\/projects\/the-conservation-of-falco-vespertinus-in-the-pannonian-region-life05-nat-h-000122\/\"><b>Red-footed falcon conservation LIFE project<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> implemented between 2006-2009.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our <strong>first destination was near Mihai Bravu<\/strong> (Ro\u0219iori commune, Bihor county) in the <strong>Lunca Barc\u0103ului Natura 2000 site<\/strong>, where in <strong>2023 we installed 20 metal nest boxes<\/strong> and <strong>10 made of wood<\/strong>. We chose to use two types of boxes to see which ones will the falcons prefer. Due to rainfall and organic matter left by the birds, wooden nestboxes degrade more quickly, so a more long-term option could be the metal ones \u2013 but only if we are sure they provide suitable nesting conditions.<\/span><\/p><p>The new nesting places didn\u2019t remain unoccupied for long. In 2024, 23 of them were used: 18 were occupied by falcons and 6 by western jackdaws. All the wooden boxes were occupied, while one third of the metal ones remained empty.<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, during our spring visit, <strong>we checked the metal and wooden boxes<\/strong>, <strong>cleaned them<\/strong> and <strong>replaced the gravel<\/strong> we regularly use as nesting material. Tree planting and installing artificial nestboxes \u2013 as part of several projects we took part in \u2013 have had the desired effect, with the number of breeding pairs increasing each year.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, maintaining this success requires regular <strong>maintenance<\/strong> and the <strong>replacement of nest boxes<\/strong> damaged by the weather or even by vandalism. Of the <strong>800 nest boxes installed as part of a LIFE project<\/strong> completed in 2020, only 500 remained in 2023, and the number continued to decrease in 2024.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Therefore, at the end of last year, we launched the <strong>\u201cEndangered Species of the Year\u201d<\/strong> programme and decided that in 2025 we would focus on the roller. We found allies \u2013 <\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/en\/partners-for-nature\/\">Betfair Development Romania<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 who understood the importance of conservation efforts and <strong>supported the purchase of 30 artificial boxes<\/strong> made of wood-concrete, a durable material.
