{"id":47520,"date":"2025-05-30T14:12:03","date_gmt":"2025-05-30T11:12:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/?p=47520"},"modified":"2025-05-30T14:37:34","modified_gmt":"2025-05-30T11:37:34","slug":"european-rollers-are-starting-their-families","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/en\/european-rollers-are-starting-their-families\/","title":{"rendered":"European rollers are starting their families"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a long and dangerous migration, the European rollers <strong>have returned to their nesting ground<\/strong>s, marking the beginning of a new breeding season.<\/p><p>This colourful bird species<strong> prefers open landscapes<\/strong> dotted with tree lines, groves, and small forest patches, though it also breeds regularly in <strong>floodplain forests<\/strong>. It d<em>oes not build<\/em> its own nest, instead, it readily occupies holes carved out by other species, such as the European green woodpecker or the Black woodpecker, typically in the trunks of old poplar trees. Outside the Carpathian Basin, rollers often nest in burrows dug into loess or sandy banks\u2014usually by European bee-eaters. Its eggs are porcelain white and oval-shaped. After approximately 17\u201319 days, the first chicks hatch. The attentive parents share all the care duties: both feed and protect the young. We did not ignore these negative changes \u2013 we took action.<\/p><p>Between the spring of 2018 and March 2019, in the framework of the\u00a0 <strong>\u201cConservation of the European Roller in the Carpathian Basin\u201d <\/strong>project <strong>we planted 3,000 grey poplar saplings<\/strong> to restore suitable habitats for the birds.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p class=\"responsive-video-wrap clr\"><iframe title=\"Milvus la treab\u0103!\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ys_RVt5coB0?list=PLI4ZtBQ9maumGgmFkLWyTaoOW1m1J7FtT\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div><\/figure><p>We also supported nesting by installing artificial nest boxes \u2013 a total of 850 boxes were placed across the region.
