To track changes in the wintering bird of prey populations, we have once again conducted our <\/span>Winter Bird of Prey Monitoring Programme<\/a><\/strong>, which has been running since 2006. During the first observation period<\/strong>, which took place at the end of last year, 40 participants<\/strong> covered 55 transects<\/strong>, recording observed species over a total distance of 490 km<\/strong>. In the second period<\/strong>, in February 2025, 52 participants<\/strong> covered 531 km<\/strong>. Observers recorded 1,196 birds of prey<\/strong> during the first field session and 1,079<\/strong> in the second.<\/span><\/p>

The most abundant species<\/strong> was the Common buzzard<\/strong> (850 in the first period + 807 in the second), followed by the Common kestrel<\/strong> (170 + 129) and the Hen harrier<\/strong> (68 + 60). While several species showed population counts below the multiannual average, the Hen harrier was observed in larger numbers than in an average year, especially in Transylvania and Moldova.<\/span><\/p>

Here<\/a> you can find the species and the number of individuals observed.<\/p>

Rare species<\/strong> were also observed, including the Eastern imperial eagle<\/strong> (3 ind.), the Greater spotted eagle<\/strong> (2), the Saker falcon<\/strong> (1), and the Long-legged buzzard<\/strong> (2).<\/span><\/p>

In December, the highest raptor densities were recorded in Bihor County (Mihai Bravu- Tama\u0219eu), Arad County (Bocsig-Ineu), and Sibiu County (Orlat \u2013 Poplaca), while in February inArad County (Bocsig-Ineu), Sibiu County (Orlat \u2013 Poplaca), and Hunedoara County (G\u00e2n\u021baga-C\u0103lan).<\/p>
