{"id":45455,"date":"2025-02-17T08:35:05","date_gmt":"2025-02-17T06:35:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/results-of-the-2025-winter-waterfowl-census\/"},"modified":"2025-02-17T09:15:18","modified_gmt":"2025-02-17T07:15:18","slug":"results-of-the-2025-winter-waterfowl-census","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/en\/results-of-the-2025-winter-waterfowl-census\/","title":{"rendered":"Results of the 2025 Winter Waterfowl Census"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between 10 and 31 January, the national waterbird census took place (known to participants as the <\/span><b>MidWinter Count<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), with the participation of dozens of volunteers. The event is organised internationally by <\/span><b>Wetlands International<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, in Romania, it is coordinated by the <\/span><b>Romanian Ornithological Society<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>Milvus Group<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><b>1,117,611 birds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were counted, of which <\/span><b>1,040,265 individuals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (93% of the total) belonged to waterbird species, which are the main focus of this annual census. A total of <\/span><b>190 species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were identified, of which <\/span><b>101 species (53.2%)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were waterbirds, dependent on wetland habitats.<\/span><\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Illusztracio-Midwinter-1024x699.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"699\" src=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Illusztracio-Midwinter-1024x699.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Illusztracio-Midwinter-1024x699.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Illusztracio-Midwinter-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Illusztracio-Midwinter-768x524.jpg 768w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Illusztracio-Midwinter-600x409.jpg 600w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Illusztracio-Midwinter.jpg 1379w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Map of the locations of the 2025 Winter Waterfowl Census<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p>Compared to the previous year, the total number of waterbird individuals recorded was nearly 150,000 higher, thanks to good coverage of key wetlands, which hosted very large numbers (such as the reservoirs along the Olt Valley and the Danube Delta).<\/p><p>This year&#8217;s census relied entirely on volunteers, who collected data alongside staff from the two coordinating organisations. We are pleased with the continued voluntary involvement of our observers, who are responsible for collecting this valuable data to track waterbird population trends at the national level. The total counts from the dedicated goose monitoring programme combined with the International Waterbird Census are as follows:<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Greater white-fronted goose (<em>Anser albifrons<\/em>) \u2013 414,024<\/li>\n\n<li>Greylag goose (<em>Anser anser)<\/em> \u2013 14,313<\/li>\n\n<li>Red-breasted goose (<em>Branta ruficollis<\/em>) \u2013 1,999<\/li>\n\n<li>Taiga bean goose (<em>Anser fabalis rossicus)<\/em> \u2013 6<\/li>\n\n<li>Lesser white-fronted goose (<em>Anser erythropus<\/em>) \u2013 4<\/li>\n\n<li>Canada goose (<em>Branta canadensis<\/em>) \u2013 2<\/li>\n\n<li>Barnacle goose (<em>Branta leucopsis<\/em>) \u2013 1<\/li><\/ol><p>Among non-waterbird species, the most numerous were: Rook (<em>Corvus frugilegus<\/em>, 31,388), Wood pigeon (<em>Columba palumbus<\/em>, 30,951), Common starling (<em>Sturnus vulgaris<\/em>, 21,602), Feral pigeon (<em>Columba livia f. domestica<\/em>, 14,365), and Western jackdaw (<em>Corvus monedula,<\/em> 5,172).<\/p><p><p data-start=\"3724\" data-end=\"3870\">During the census, several rare or unusual species were observed, which are either sporadic in Romania or interesting for this time of year: Slavonian\u00a0grebe (<em>Podiceps auritus<\/em>) \u2013 35 individuals,\u00a0 Great white pelican (<em>Pelecanus onocrotalus<\/em>) \u2013 2 individuals,\u00a0Barnacle goose (<em>Branta leucopsis<\/em>) \u2013 1 individual, Bean goose (<em>Anser fabalis<\/em>) \u2013 4 individuals, Velvet scoter (<em>Melanitta fusca<\/em>) \u2013 27 individuals, Long-tailed duck (<em>Clangula hyemalis<\/em>) \u2013 6 individuals, Ring-billed gull (<em>Larus delawarensis<\/em>) \u2013 1 individual, Pallas&#8217;s gull (<em>Larus ichthyaetus<\/em>) \u2013 174 individuals, Great black-backed gull (<em>Larus marinus<\/em>) \u2013 3 individuals, Herring gull (<em>Larus argentatus<\/em>) \u2013 5 individuals, Greater flamingo (<em>Phoenicopterus roseus<\/em>) \u2013 1 individual.<\/p><\/p><p>As mentioned, the data collected by our volunteers is centralised by Wetlands International.
