Every year, before the fall migration, experts and volunteers carry out weekly counts at the species&#8217; favorite roosting sites in Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Serbia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The September 18 monitoring broke the record set 10 years ago (in 2014 a total of 11,160 individuals were counted at 43 sites), after<strong> 11,751 individuals were counted at 49 roosting sites<\/strong>. At the next monitoring on September 25, the number of birds was even higher at<strong> 14,623<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_20240925_192648-scaled.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_20240925_192648-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-43804\" srcset=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_20240925_192648-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_20240925_192648-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_20240925_192648-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_20240925_192648-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_20240925_192648-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/IMG_20240925_192648-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In<strong> Romania<\/strong>, with the help of volunteers we monitored and counted falcons at 3 gathering sites in Cri\u0219ana and 3 in Banat. This year, we recorded l<strong>ess individuals than almost any previous year<\/strong>. One of them could be the <strong>insufficient food supply<\/strong>, which is decisive, since at this time of the year the falcons are preparing physically for their journey of thousands of kilometres around the gathering sites. Another reason that could influence the choice of location is the <strong>weather conditions<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the interesting things about this year&#8217;s synchronous census was that participants from Hungary were able to observe <strong>an old falcon that was ringed 16 years ago<\/strong> in the same country and is estimated to have travelled 255,000 kilometres from its first migration to the present day, a distance that would have taken it around the world 6.5 times.
