{"id":41473,"date":"2024-03-04T10:33:02","date_gmt":"2024-03-04T08:33:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/results-of-the-2024-winter-waterfowl-census\/"},"modified":"2024-03-04T13:19:38","modified_gmt":"2024-03-04T11:19:38","slug":"results-of-the-2024-winter-waterfowl-census","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/en\/results-of-the-2024-winter-waterfowl-census\/","title":{"rendered":"Results of the 2024 Winter Waterfowl Census"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between 10 to 31 January the <strong>Romanian Ornithological Society (SOR)<\/strong> and the <strong>Milvus Group Bird and Nature Protection Association<\/strong> organised the <strong>national winter waterbird synchronous count<\/strong> (commonly known as Midwinter) in Romania, coordinated internationally by Wetlands International.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A total of <strong>197 observers<\/strong> participated in the survey, covering <strong>537 wetlands or sites<\/strong> nationwide. The total number of <strong>birds observed was 1,046,241,<\/strong> of which about<strong> 891,013<\/strong> (85%) belonged to different waterbird species. A total of <strong>179 bird species<\/strong> were identified, of which 92 (51.4%) could be classified as waterfowl or as species whose life cycle is closely linked to wetlands<\/span><\/p><p><\/p><p>The number of waterbird species recorded this year exceeded the previous year by more than 330,000 individuals (a significant increase compared to 2023), thanks to better coverage of wetlands.&#13;\n<\/p><p>This year&#8217;s count relied entirely on volunteers, who collected data alongside staff from both organisations. We greatly appreciate the continued volunteer participation of our observers, who are responsible for collecting this valuable information to help us monitor waterfowl populations on a national scale.&#13;\n<\/p><p>The most frequently observed waterbird species were (this excludes goose species, whose populations were covered much more fully by a dedicated survey), with the numbers recorded in the previous year in brackets for comparison:&#13;\n<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mallard\u00a0 (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anas platyrhynchos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) \u2013 237323 ind. (26.434 ind.)<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p>Of the non-aquatic species, the largest numbers belonged to the following species:&#13;\n<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wood Pigeon (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Columba palumbus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) \u2013 64.433 ind.<\/span><\/li>\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rook (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corvus frugilegus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) \u2013 30.583 ind.<\/span><\/li>\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feral Pigeon (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Columba livia f. domestica<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) \u2013 10.262 ind.<\/span><\/li>\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Western Jackdaw (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corvus monedula<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) \u2013 7.680 ind.<\/span><\/li>\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fieldfare (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turdus pilaris<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) \u2013 6.303 ind.<\/span><\/li>\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common Magpie (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pica pica<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) \u2013 3.231 ind.<\/span><\/li>\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Hooded Crow (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corvus cornix<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) \u2013 3.167 ind.<\/span><\/li>\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goldfinch (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carduelis carduelis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) \u2013 3.109 ind.<\/span><\/li>\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tree Sparrow\u00a0 (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Passer montanus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) \u2013 2.722 ind.<\/span><\/li>\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chaffinch (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fringilla coelebs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) \u2013 2.337 ind.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the observations, some surveyors have managed to record species that are rare in our country, occur sporadically or are of interest during the winter. For example, the Slavonian Grebe <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Podiceps auritus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; 13 ind., the White Pelican <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Pelecanus onocrotalus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; 19 ind., the Canada Goose<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Branta canadensis)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; 1 ind., the Bean Goose<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Anser fabalis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; 2 ind. (4 individuals were recorded during the national goose survey), the Velvet Scoter <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Melanitta fusca<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; 41 ind., Common Scoter <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Melanitta nigra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; 3 ind., Long-tailed Duck <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Clangula hyemalis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; 13 pd., Glaucous Gull <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Larus hyperboreus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; 1 ind., Ring-billed Gull<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Larus delawarensis<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; 1 ind., Pallas\u2019s Gull<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Larus ichthyaetus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; 60 ind., Great Black-backed Gull<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Larus marinus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; 4 ind. and Greater Flamingo<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Phoenicopterus roseus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) &#8211; 2 ind.<\/span><\/p><p>As mentioned above, the data collected by our volunteers is centralised by Wetlands International.
