{"id":16243,"date":"2019-02-05T12:59:55","date_gmt":"2019-02-05T10:59:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/international-waterbird-census-january-2019\/"},"modified":"2022-07-27T15:20:41","modified_gmt":"2022-07-27T12:20:41","slug":"international-waterbird-census-january-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/en\/international-waterbird-census-january-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"International Waterbird Census, January 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Between 10<sup>th <\/sup>and 20<sup>th<\/sup> January, the traditional International Waterbird Census (Midwinter Count), organized annually by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wetlands.org\/our-approach\/healthy-wetland-nature\/international-waterbird-census\/#read-more\">Wetlands International<\/a>, took place. In Romania the event is jointly coordinated by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sor.ro\">Romanian Ornithological Society<\/a> and the Milvus Group Bird and Nature Protection Association.<\/p><p>Due to the prolonged cold weather preceding the census, the water bodies were partially or entirely frozen in most regions. In total 397,961 birds were counted of which 357,114 (89.7% of the total) were aquatic species. During the count, 147 species were identified, of which 60 species (40.8%) are considered dependent on wetlands.<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/midwinter2019-4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"722\" src=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/midwinter2019-4-1024x722.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/midwinter2019-4-1024x722.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/midwinter2019-4-600x423.jpg 600w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/midwinter2019-4-300x212.jpg 300w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/midwinter2019-4-768x542.jpg 768w, https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/midwinter2019-4.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>The program was attended by a number of 108 observers (ornithologists and volunteers), covering 238 wetland areas from 33 counties.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div><p>The most numerous waterbird species were the following:<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Mallard (<em>Anas platyrhynchos<\/em>) \u2013 121,851<\/li><li>Coot (<em>Fulica atra<\/em>) \u2013 83,771<\/li><li>Common Pochard (<em>Aythya ferina<\/em>) \u2013 20,306<\/li><li>Black-headed Gull (<em>Chroicocephalus ridibundus<\/em>) \u2013 18,185<\/li><li>Greater White-fronted Goose (<em>Anser albifrons<\/em>) \u2013 12,053<\/li><li>Tufted Duck (<em>Aythya fuligula<\/em>) \u2013 11,548<\/li><li>Mute Swan (<em>Cygnus olor<\/em>) \u2013 9,789<\/li><li>Greylag Goose (<em>Anser anser<\/em>) \u2013 9,748<\/li><li>Caspian Gull (<em>Larus cachinnans<\/em>) \u2013 9,727<\/li><li>Cormorant (<em>Phalacrocorax carbo<\/em>) \u2013 9,042<\/li><\/ol><p>The most numerous five non-aquatic species were the following:<\/p><ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Rook (<em>Corvus frugilegus<\/em>) \u2013 12,233<\/li><li>Jackdaw (<em>Corvus monedula<\/em>) \u2013 5,846<\/li><li>Feral Pigeon (<em>Columba livia<\/em> f<em>. domestica<\/em>) \u2013 3,582<\/li><li>Tree Sparrow (<em>Passer montanus<\/em>) \u2013 1,853<\/li><li>Wood Pigeon (<em>Columba palumbus<\/em>) \u2013 1,631<\/li><\/ol><p>Several species with sporadic occurrence for the country and some considered interesting for this period of the year have also been also observed during the census. These are the Bewick&#8217;s Swan (<em>Cygnus columbianus <\/em>&#8211; 114 ex.), Bean Goose (<em>Anser fabalis<\/em> &#8211; 5 ex.), Herring Gull (<em>Larus argentatus<\/em> &#8211; 1 ex.), Pallas&#8217;s Gull (<em>Larus ichthyaetus<\/em> &#8211; 6 ex.), Glaucous Gull (<em>Larus hyperboreus<\/em> &#8211; 1 ex.), Great Black-backed Gull (<em>Larus marinus<\/em> &#8211; 1 ex.), Common Sandpiper (<em>Actitis hypoleucos<\/em> &#8211; 1 ex.) , Common Redpoll (<em>Acanthis flammea<\/em> &#8211; 4 ex.), Common Chiffchaff (<em>Phylloscopus collybita<\/em> &#8211; 4 ex.) and European Serin (<em>Serinus s<\/em><em>erinus<\/em> &#8211; 1 ex).<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Between 10th and 20th January, the traditional International Waterbird Census (Midwinter Count), organized annually by Wetlands International, took place.
