{"id":15710,"date":"2017-04-10T21:15:38","date_gmt":"2017-04-10T21:15:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/2017\/04\/10\/annual-report-of-the-wildlife-rehabilitation-centre-milvus-2016\/"},"modified":"2017-04-10T21:15:38","modified_gmt":"2017-04-10T21:15:38","slug":"annual-report-of-the-wildlife-rehabilitation-centre-milvus-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/en\/annual-report-of-the-wildlife-rehabilitation-centre-milvus-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"Annual Report of the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre MILVUS \u2013 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/1.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-8923\" src=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/1-346x216.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"346\" height=\"216\"><\/a>Our Rehabilitation Center obtained very good results in 2016 in respect of both the number of patients and the quality of our services.\n\nThe Center has been working almost all year at full capacity, which shows that the infrastructure development in S\u00eensimion was necessary.<!--more-->\n\nOur most important achievements in this year:\n<ul>\n \t<li>In January we launched an emergency number &#8211; 0722-533.816 available 24 hours for those who have found wounded animals.<\/li>\n \t<li>In February we organized a national conference for veterinarians interested in first aid and treatment of injured wild animals. As a result of this meeting, we laid down the bases of a national volunteer veterinarian network, comprising of doctors who are ready to receive injured animals and to grant them first aid, before sending them towards a rehabilitation facility. Through the development of this volunteer network, we managed to set up more than 50 first aid points, in 17 counties across in the whole country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-8925\" src=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/3-346x195.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"346\" height=\"195\"><\/a>In the frame of the project &#8221; National network for saving injured wild animals &#8221; financed by the EEA grants 2009 &#8211; 2014 within the framework of the NGOS in Romania, aviaries were built in S\u00eensimion: one of large size for the rehabilitation of big animals \u2013 an aviary with five rooms for birds which cannot be rehabilitated, but can be visited &#8211; and a shelter for inland and sea turtles.\n\nUnder the same project, we managed to launch a dedicated web page (www.wildliferescue.ro), where visitors can find relevant information regarding the rescue of injured wild animals (a map with first aid points available in the country, a green telephone number, etc.).\n\nWe managed to deploy in the S\u00eensimion aviaries a network of surveillance cameras, connected to the internet, so we can supervise the birds from our central office in T\u00eergu-Mure\u0219 as well. This is a very important development from the point of view of the treatment and rehabilitation of the animals (also achieved under the EEA grant).\n\nIn November we participated on a fundraising event called T\u00e2rgu-Mure\u0219 Donors Circle, in the event we managed to gather 5000 RON for the construction of 4 new aviaries at the rehabilitation center.\n\n<a href=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-8924\" src=\"https:\/\/milvus.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/2-346x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"346\" height=\"169\"><\/a>In 2016, the Rehabilitation Center sheltered 166 birds, 35 of mammals, 16 turtles, the center\u2019s team offered consultancy (usually on phone) for the rehabilitation of further 150 birds.&nbsp;The number of species entering the center as patients was also high, 47 birds, 6 mammals and 4 reptiles. The greater number of species coming to the Center entail a challenge in respect of the experience of patients care (of species) arriving for the first time. The patients arrived from 42 localities, from 17 counties.\n\nThe high number of counties of origin shows that our centre is still having national character.\n\nOf the 217 of animals entering, 54 have been transferred to other medical centers (bats, etc.), 35 surgery took place, 32 birds have benefited from medication.\n\nThe rest of the patients have passed only through rehabilitation and improvement of general condition.\n\nOn the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> of June 2016 we were notified about a black-necked grebe \u201cstranded\u201d in a yard in Corunca village. After a quick medical exam by our colleague at Vets4Wild, the bird was ringed and released in the outskirts of T\u00e2rgu Mure\u0219. 149 days and 2789 km later, it was recaptured alive and well in
