On the 18th December 2007, the Călimani Mountain’s sulphur mine guards found a Red-throated Diver (Gavia stellata). They soon informed the rangers from Călimani Mountain National Park, who brought the bird to the park’s office in Vatra Dornei. One day later, Elena Cenușă, the biologist of the park asked for the help of the Milvus Group members on our e-mail list. Following our indications, they examined the bird to detect possible injuries or lesions on the wings or on the body. The results of the detailed examination showed that the bird was completely healthy and in a good condition – therefore it was decided to release it as soon as possible. In the afternoon of the same day, the park’s team found a portion with deep water on the Bistrița River, suitable for releasing. Soon, the bird adopted the normal, characteristic behavior (consecutive diving), proving that the saving action was successful.
