In winter of 2005 – 2006 we observed for the first time unusually numerous flocks of Great Cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) on the Mureș River. In the period of 2005 November and 2006 February the Milvus Group’s ornithologists reported flocks with 300 – 900 individuals at the Mureș River, between localities Brâncovenești and Luduș. In winter of 2007 the birds reappeared again; flocks counting 200 – 400 specimens can be seen regularly also above the town of Tg. – Mureș.  Despite the fact that in previous years we saw Great Cormorants also during their late fall – winter roaming, we considered worthy to note the presence of the species in such big number in Central Transylvania.
