Stork Conservation

Main Goal

To ensure that all conditions are in place to sustain a healthy White Stork population in Romania .

Goals, objectives

  • to broaden the program of moving the White Stork nests from electric networks to special supports, from Transylvania to the whole country;
  • to popularize White Stork protection among people who live near them;
  • to learn people practical ways of how to help stork – ex. putting supports to the roof of the houses;
  • to continue the monitoring of the population in Transylvania and to extend it to the whole country;
  • to ensure that significant part of the population will breed on protected areas – Natura 2000 or other protected sites and their habitat will not change in the future;
  • to continue the colored-ringing of the population to find out more about movement, behavior, etc.

Activities, results

  • together with Electricity Companies moving White Stork nests from electric networks to special supports in many counties from Transylvania – more than 1000 special supports till now;
  • monitoring the Transylvanian population in 2000;
  • leading international project “White Stork Protection in the Carpathian Basin ” – in collaboration with partners from Hungary and the former Yugoslavia;
  • database about the Stork population, number of pairs, breeding success, etc.;
  • raising awareness on Stork Protection – on our drawing competition we received 8555 works about Storks from 8322 children from three countries;
  • coordinating of the VI th International White Stork Census (2004-2005) in Romania on behalf of the Romanian Academy of Sciences and the Ministry of Environment and Water Management;
  • coordinating and facilitating the creation of sustainable “Stork village” in Central Transylvania with the financial support of the Environmental Partnership Foundation under the Living Heritage program
