Raptor Conservation

Main Goal

To ensure the long term survival and recovery of diurnal and nocturnal raptor populations in Romania.

Objectives

  • to develop national action plans for species threatened on global or European level;
  • to develop country wide monitoring program for priority species;
  • to change of negative attitude of different social groups towards raptors in general or towards certain species;
  • to implement direct conservation programs for different species (ex. Lesser Spotted Eagle, Saker, Red Footed Falcon, Golden Eagle, Kestrel etc)

Activities, results

  • initiation and implementation of national monitoring of Lesser Spotted Eagle;
  • setting out nest-boxes and artificial nests for raptors;
  • compiling database about more than 1000 raptor nests;
  • publishing a series of awareness raising leaflets and a technical guide for raptor protection;
  • implementing the Red Footed Falcon conservation programe in the western plains of Romania;
  • leading “Complex Regional Raptor Conservation Project” in Central Transylvania between 2001-2003;
  • monitoring of  Golden Eagle and Peregrine Falcon populations in Romania, 2001-2010;
  • monitoring the raptor migration at the Macin Watchsite, 2002-2007
  • implementing the project “Status and distribution of three raptor species in Western Romania” financed by BOU, 2005;
  • implementing the ” Wintering Birds of Prey Monitoring Programme”, 2006-2010;
  • implementing the project Lesser Spotted Eagle, Flaghsip species for the Carpathians – 2005, financed by CERI;
  • implementing the project “Saker Falco cherrug survey in Dobrogea, 2007″ financed by BOU and International Wildlife Consultants
  • implementing the project “Partnership for the Conservation of flagship raptors in the South Western Carpathians” financed by the Environmental Partnership Foundation from Miercurea Ciuc and by the Royal Netherlands Embassy from Romania in 2007
  • study on birds of prey migration at Bosporus (Turkey) in 2008;
  • organizing several workshops on specific raptor conservation issues;
  • implementing the LIFE+ project “Conservation of Aquila pomarina in Romania”, LIFE08NAT/RO/000501, 2010-2013
  • implementing the LIFE+ project “Conservetion of Falco cherrug in North-east Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia” LIFE09NAT/HU/000384, 2011-2014
