Main Goal

Contributing to the effective implementation of the EU Habitats and Birds Directive in Romania

Objectives

  • to help and support the establishment of the Natura 2000 network, by proposing new sites;
  • to raise awareness on the Natura 2000 issue on different levels – among important stakeholders, farmers, foresters, etc.;
  • to l obby for better involvement of NGOs in Natura 2000 establishment and management process;
  • to i nfluence policy makers at national and local level for giving higher priority to biodiversity conservation;
  • to promote sectorial integration of the Natura 2000 concept;
  • to analyze national and EU legislation regarding N2000 and propose improvements;
  • to monitor the functioning of the Natura 2000 network and of the other existing nature protection areas in Romania;
  • to identify and monitor the threats of human activities affecting Natura 2000 sites

Activities, results

  • the most important result of the WG is the acceptance of our proposals about the future SPA’s by the Danube Delta National Institute for Research and Development (INCDDD) – institution assigned to elaborate the official list of Natura 2000 sites in Romania;
  • proposed two new species to be included in the Appendix I of the Birds Directive;active part in the Natura 2000 coalition in Romania (www.natura2000.ro/coalitiaong);
  • participating in the Ceeweb Natura 2000 Working Group (www.ceeweb.org);
  • in 2004 we began the „Natura 2000 in the Niraj Valey” project with the Financiar support of the Environmental Partnership Foundation. The major goal of the project is to protect the valuable species and habitats from the Niraj Valey by including the area in the future Natura 2000 network, based on the Birds Directive.
