Amphibian & Reptile Conservation

Main goal

To ensure the long term survival of the amphibian and reptile species in Romania and to maintaine their suitable habitats in Romania

Objectives

  • to map different sites with high herpetofaunistical potential and to propose these to be sites NATURE 2000
  • to map and to monitorize the herpetofauna of the National Parks and of the sites proposed to be sites NATURE 2000
  • to develop national action plans or local management plans for species threatened at global or European level;
  • to identify the endangering factors at local and national level;
  • to create a database wich serves the scientifical planning of the protecting activity of species or of habitats vital for the prior species
  • to establish a monitoring network of volunteers to monitorize different aspects of crime cases against the herpetofauna (finding and monitorizing the’crimescenes’ where amphibians are killed and collected to be consumed and/or sold, finding and monitorizing the places where the migrating amphibians are killed by intensive traffic, monitoring the market places and the petshops where the autohton species are sold, etc.), and diminishing the number of cases trough strict application of the actual law (in collaboration with competent institutions)
  • to change the negative attitude of different social groups towards amphibians and reptiles in general or towards certain species, to decrease the effect of the beliefs and superstitions based on misinterpretated observations wich harm the image of this group of animals.
  • to organize annually a herpetological camp with a well defined goal on the mapping and protection of herpetofauna in Romania

  • mapping and rescue of the herpetofauna in Rosia Montana (from 2004)
  • mapping of the herpetofauna in Brasov county (2005)
  • popularizing amphibians and reptiles, destroying harmful miths (2005)
  • mapping of the herpetofauna on Culmea Pricopanului – Macin Mountains National Park (2005)
