In the last month, the rehabilitation of birds from our center has seen a remarkable success. After the birds were kept under continuous observation for a sufficient period of time for total recovery, six birds has been released. The Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) was confiscated wit the help of Lucian Pârvulescu from an illegal owner, approximately one year ago.
During the school year 2008-2009, environmental education trainings were held in 30 classes from the Iernut elementary school. The pupils had the oportunity to learn about birds on field at the SPA-Iernut fishponds. These activities were organizet as a part of the project “Popularization of the Elesteele Iernut Cipau Natura 2000 site and preparation of its managemnt plan involving local stakeholders” financed by the Environmental Partnership Foundation and MOL Romania.
În anul şcolar 2008-2009, 30 clase al Şcolii Generale din Iernut au avut oportunitatea de a participa la cursuri de educaţie ecologică. Elevii au participat şi la ieşiri de teren organizate la Eleşteele de la Iernut. Activităţile au fost derulate în cadrul proiectului ”Popularizarea sitului Natura 2000 „Eleşteele Iernut-Cipău” şi realizarea planului de management cu implicarea factorilor de interes locali” finantat de Fundatia pentru Parteneriat si Mol.
At 10th of October 2009 members of the Milvus Group will organize the first Ornithological Marathon at at Iernut-Cipau fishponds. The event is part of the project “Popularization of the Elesteele Iernut Cipau Natura 2000 site and preparation of its managemnt plan involving local stakeholders” financed by the Environmental Partnership Foundation and MOL Romania.

On 16th June 2009, members of the Milvus Group captured and ringed near Livada de Bihor (Bihor County) an adult female Long-eared Owl (Asio otus) with an aberrant colour. This partially melanistic birdshowed all black feathers on his head, but we could also detect blackish feathers on the back, chest and wings, and the general plumage has a darker shade than normal. It seems that all these anomalous characters have not hampered the bird in breeding, which showing retired, but still well visible hatching patch, which confirms the fact that this bird had laid eggs in this year.
In autumn 2008, Milvus Group was contacted and informed by Eugen Petrescu (SOR Tulcea), then by the Environmental Guard Bacău about the captive White-tailed Eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) which was kept at the Oneşti ZOO, belong to the local town hall. The circumstances regarding this bird’s origin have been not clear, we knew only poor information that two years ago this specimen was brought here somewhere from Danube Delta area. The environmental authorities have proposed to ZOO the releasing of the bird. Eugen Petrescu was contacted to suggest them a location in the Danube Delta, where will be possible to release the bird. The exhibition of the 1st International “Milvus” Nature Photography Contest was opened on the 12th of July, 2009 in the exhibition room of the Unitarian Church (no. 13, Bolyai Square), Târgu Mureş and can be visited until Friday, 17th of July. On the same occasion the winning ceremony took place.
The exhibition contains the winning pictures (Grand Prize and prizes I, II, III in two categories) and other 23 pictures selected for exhibition.
The awards ceremony for the 1st International “Milvus” Nature Photography Contest will take place in the exhibition room of the Unitarian Church (no. 13, Bolyai Square), Târgu Mureş, starting from 12 o’clock in 12th of July.
In the same room, the exhibition containing the best pictures chosen by the jury will be open to the public for a week.
On of 27th of June 2009 biologists with different specializations met at Iernut fishponds. The aim of the meeting was to gather new informations on biodiversity of the SPA. During the field activity they gathered data about birds, amphibians, mammales and plants. The event was financed by the Environmental Partnership Foundation and Mol Romania.
