Amphibian & Reptile Conservation

Main goal

To ensure the long term survival of the amphibian and reptile species in Romania and to maintaine their suitable habitats in Romania

  • to map different sites with high herpetofaunistical potential and to propose these to be sites NATURE 2000
  • to map and to monitorize the herpetofauna of the National Parks and of the sites proposed to be sites NATURE 2000
  • to develop national action plans or local management plans for species threatened at global or European level
  • to identify the endangering factors at local and national level
  • to create a database which serves the scientific planning of the protecting activities of species or of habitats vital for the prior species
  • to establish a monitoring network of volunteers to monitorize different aspects of crime cases against the herpetofauna (finding and monitorizing the’crimescenes’ where amphibians are killed and collected to be consumed and/or sold, finding and monitorizing the places where the migrating amphibians are killed by intensive traffic, monitoring the market places and the petshops where the autohton species are sold, etc.), and diminishing the number of cases trough strict application of the actual law (in collaboration with competent institutions)
  • to change the negative attitude of different social groups towards amphibians and reptiles in general or towards certain species, to decrease the effect of the beliefs and superstitions based on misinterpretated observations wich harm the image of this group of animals

  • inventory of herpetofauna and finalizing the management planes (for the target species) in Trascău Mountains and Podișul Hârtibaciului Natura 2000 sites (POS Mediu projects, from 2011)
  • inventory of prey species (amphibians and reptiles) distribution and abundancy in Aquila pomarina hunting areas in Dealurile Târnavelor-Valea Nirajului, Podișul Hârtibaciului and Piemontul Făgăraș Natura 2000 sites, in frame of LIFE08 NAT/RO/000501- Conservation of Aquila pomarina in Romania (2010-2011)
  • implementation in collaboration with Green Echoes Association ( of „Conservation of European Pond Turtle in Transilvania, Romania: Guideline for monitoring and manadgement of small European Pond Turtle populations and its habitats” project ( The main result of this project is a guideline (, which beside others summaries the management measures which could ensure a favorable protection status of the target species (2009-2010)
  • proposing and facilitating designation of new NATURA 2000 sites based on our preliminary results. Our proposals could be accessed here: (2010-2011)
  • mapping distribution of NATURA 2000 priority species (Triturus cristatus, Triturus dobrogicus, Lissotriton vulgaris ampelensis, Lissotriton montandoni, Bombina bombina, Bombina variegata, Testudo graeca ibera, Testudo hermanni boettgeri, Emys orbicularis, Elaphe sauromates, Vipera ursinii rakosiensis) in Romania focusing mainly on habitats from the adjacent areas of Romanian Rivers, like Olt, Mureş, Vedea, Caraş, Nera, Teleorman, Ialomiţa, Buzău, Siret, Moldova, Bârlad, Suceava, etc. (2009-2010)
  • initiating the “Turtle Measuring Day” (, which focus on increasing owners knowledge on exotic turtles (2009-2010)
  • compiling of a bilingual determinator of Romanian amphibians and reptiles ( (from 2008)
  • initiating the Trachemys Adoption coalition (, group which popularize the problem of released exotic turtles in nature (from 2008)
  • mapping the herpetofauna in the Şinca Noua’s area (Braşov County) (2007)
  • mapping of the herpetofauna on Culmea Pricopanului – Măcin Mountains National Park (2005-2007)
  • popularizing amphibians and reptiles, destroying harmful miths (2005)
  • mapping of the herpetofauna in Braşov county (2005)
  • mapping and rescue of the herpetofauna in Roşia Montana (2004)
