Kerekes I. 3This year “Milvus Group” Bird and Nature Protection Association, together with the Romanian Ornithological Society (SOR) organized again the annual census of wintering waterfowl (Midwinter Waterbird Census) in Romania. The main period of observations was between the 10th and 31st of January, but because it coincided with another, broader survey organized this winter, the last observation day was 4th of February. The International Waterbird Census (IWC) is coordinated by Wetlands International and it is organized every year in most countries of the world. (more…)

The main period of observations was between the 10th and 20th of January, but because of a broader survey organized this winter, the last observation day was the 1st of February. Midwinter Waterbird Census

This year, between 10th and 20th January “Milvus Group” Association together with the Romanian Ornithological Society (SOR) organized again the annual census of the wintering waterfowl (Midwinter Waterbird Census) in Romania. The event is coordinated by Wetlands International. Data for our organization were sent by our members and also by other volunteers, totalizing 49 participants. They made observations in 92 different areas and locations from the range of 24 counties. In total there were counted 226,565 birds belonging to 127 species. From this, a number of 188,809 specimens (which means 83.3% from the total) belong to different waterbird and aquatic species. The five most common species were the Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) – 80,063 ex., the Coot (Fulica atra) – 27,082 ex., the Rook (Corvus frugilegus) –23166 ex., the White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons) – 18,214 ex. and the Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) – 6,093 ex..
