Conservation of the Lesser Spotted Eagle in Romania among the first 17 projects of 2014 European Commission LIFE program

P1100182 From all the LIFE projects finished in 2014, only 17 were selected as the Best LIFE-Nature projects, and two of them are from Romania. Congratulations to the Ursuslife project, selected among the 5 best projects! The “Conservation of the Aquila pomarina in Romania” was implemented between 2010 – 2014 by the Environmental Protection Agency – Sibiu, “Milvus Group” Bird and Nature Protection  Association and the Romanian Ornithological Society. Arlie the Lesser Spotted Eagle begins his spring migration northwards

phoca_thumb_l_dscn1332Arlie, the adult Lesser Spotted Eagle whose movements the Conservation of the Lesser Spotted Eagle LIFE project team have been tracking by satellite transmitter since last year, has started his spring migration northwards. The satellite information, charted using the Argos System, shows that between 8 and 11 am on the 14th February, he started flying North East from Namibia. By the 17th, he had travelled 650km, bringing him near the border of Zambia. (more…)

At the end of May 2013 a Saker Falcon was caught and tagged with satellite transmitter. The data from this Saker’s transmitter named Toro gives information about the way Sakers use their hunting territory, their habitats preference, their various prey sources and the size of a Romanian Saker Falcon breeding territory. Not long before, these information could be gained only through direct observation made by ornithologists standing long hours in a certain place next to the nest, which despite of the huge effort offered only a small amount of the information which modern technology gives us nowadays. Life Nature Project Start-up Meeting

In the frame of our Red-footed Falcon conservation program and according to the involvement of the Milvus Group in the LIFE Nature project named Conservation of Falco vespertinus in the Pannonian Region , two members of our organization were invited to the Project Start-up Meeting, which took place at the Körösvölgy Visitor Center of the Körös-Maros National Parc Directorate, at Szarvas (Hungary) on 1 st of December. The meeting has begun with the presentation of the target species’ situation both in Hungary and Romania (presented by Mr. Péter Palatitz – MME/BirdLife Hungary, respectively by the Milvus Group’s specialists), recent information about the distribution of breeding pairs in 2005 and those about the gathering places used by Red-falcons as roosting sites in the period before migration being also included. Once Mr. Péter Bánfi, as the Manager of this project was introducing the main aspects of the project itself, the Start-up meeting of the Steering Committee took place, every partner organization nominating a candidate to this committee. The event was closed by a meeting of the scientific committee, by which the steps of elaboration of the future database was also discussed. (more…)
