This year, Members of Milvus Group continued to verify the Lesser Spotted Eagle nests, the breeding success and the threatening factors in the breeding season and ringing the chicks in the two Natura 2000 sites. The activity is part of “LIFE08 NAT/RO/000501 project – Conservation of the Lesser Spotted Eagle in Romania – other conservation activities were also implemented.

On the 22th of July, during synchronic raptor observations on the Dealurile Târnavelor and Valea Nirajului Natura 2000 sites, we identified more Lesser Spotted Eagle territories and the approximate location of their nests. Continue reading

Arlie the Lesser Spotted Eagle arrives back in Romania

ArlieArlie, the Lesser Spotted Eagle which the Conservation of the Lesser Spotted Eagle LIFE project team have been tracking by satellite transmitter since last year, has arrived back in Romania after a long migration through Africa. On Wednesday, his GPS coordinates showed him to flying at about 1260m altitude over the Carpathian Curve, around 50 km East of Brașov.

Since leaving his nest 206 days ago, in September last year, Arlie has travelled 24468 km. His journey took him through three continents and 17 countries. From the 1106 transmissions we received from him, his journey could be charted down through the Bosphorus bottleneck and along the east coast of Africa, before veering west to Namibia where he spent the winter.

Arlie migration routeHis return, following roughly the same route, has so far taken just under two months. However, we must still wait a few days before he reaches his nesting area near Berivoi, Piemontul Făgăraș.

Arlie’s migration can be followed here.

phoca_thumb_l_dscn1332Arlie, the adult Lesser Spotted Eagle whose movements the Conservation of the Lesser Spotted Eagle LIFE project team have been tracking by satellite transmitter since last year, has started his spring migration northwards. The satellite information, charted using the Argos System, shows that between 8 and 11 am on the 14th February, he started flying North East from Namibia. A Year with Transylvania’s Lesser Spotted Eagles

chick 1As autumn rolls around and the Lesser Spotted Eagle (Aquila pomarina) sets off on its yearly migration down to its winter quarters in Central and Southern Africa, we can look back on what has been a successful year for the Life Pomarina Conservation Project. Jointly implemented by Milvus Group, The Environmental Protection Agency Sibiu and the Romanian Ornithological Society, the project aims to ensure conditions to achieve and maintain favorable conservation status for the eagles across three Special Protection Areas (SPA) in Transylvania. Of these sites, Milvus Group is directly responsible for two: Dealurile Târnavelor – Valea Nirajului and Podişul Hârtibaciului. Continue reading

Old Lands and New Horizons: The European Bird Census Council conference In Cluj Napoca

3 photoshopIn the middle of September Cluj Napoca was host to the 19th conference of the European Bird Census Council (EBCC). Organised jointly by Babeș-Bolyai University, Romanian Ornithological Society (BirdLife Romania) and Milvus Group, the conference bought together people involved in bird monitoring, research and conservation from all across Europe and beyond. The topics covered, each presented by experts in their respective fields, were varied, ranging from new technologies and methodologies in bird monitoring through to discussions on the causes of changes in bird populations, distribution and demographics, the factors influencing these changes and the effectiveness of conservation programs currently in place to address them.  Continue reading

Year Two of the Natura 2000 Promotion Camp

In tabara

Following the success of last year’s camp near Jibert, Milvus Group held another camp this summer, between the 9th and 14th of July, for children interested in nature and conservation. This time the participants were selected from the “I also take part in Natura 2000” contest. From the 500 registered participants, 21 pupils from 4 schools finally were chosen and given the opportunity to expand their theoretical knowledge in the practical environment of the camp. Over the week we looked to enrich the children’s knowledge about nature and nature conservation and present the values and the importance of Natura 2000 sites. Continue reading

Conservation measures for saving the Lesser Spotted Eagle in Romania

The Lesser Spotted Eagle is an endangered, protected species and some 22% of its world population breeds in Romania. The Regional Environmental Protection Agency of Sibiu, “Milvus Group” Bird and Nature Protection Association and the Romanian Ornithological Society are implementing a LIFE project financed by the European Union, which has the objective of ensuring the optimal conditions for the conservation of this species.

On the 22th of March 2012 members of Milvus Group checked one of the Lesser Spotted Eagle nests, known to them since the year 1999, near Valea locality, Mureș county, but they found only logged trees instead of the oak with the Lesser Spotted Eagle nest. Continue reading

The tree with the Lesser Spotted Eagle nest was cut down

From 2011 the movements of a Lesser Spotted Eagle can be followed through satellite: in the frame of the „Conservation of Aquila pomarina in Romania” LIFE project the ornithologists of Milvus Group mounted a satellite transmitter on the back of the adult male named Jobbágy. Currently the bird is near Congo, he`s hurrying back to his nest near Valea locality, where he has been breeding successfully in the past years, but he will only find a cut tree instead of the oak with his nest. Conciliation meeting at national level between the Romanian electricity transmission network operators and nongovernmental bird protection organizations

Overhead power lines have a strong influence on wild bird populations. In some cases this influence is a positive one, like in the case of Saker Falcon population from the Carpathian Basin, which breeds mostly on high voltage pylons. Unfortunately negative interactions are more frequent than positive ones, because tens of thousands of birds die yearly by electrocution on the medium voltage pylons. Electrocution is one of the most important risk factors for White Storks and many raptor birds. At the same time bird electrocution on pylons generate lots of power-cuts for the electricity suppliers, thus both parts are interested in resolving this problem. Continue reading
