European Pond Turtle inventory programme

In spring of the year 2009 the Milvus Groups Amphibian and Reptile Protection WorkGroup, will start an intensive European Pond Turtle, Emys orbicularis inventory programme. Due to the lack of field investigations, the present status of the species is countrywide unknown. Degradation and loss of natural habitats caused in many locations the decrease of turtle population size and even the local extinction of the species. The main goal of the activity is to designate new protected areas. The European Pond Turtle is a species of community interest, just its presence aprove the designation of new Natura 2000 sites in Romania.
